As for the life of Pocahontas, the whole myth about her and John Smith was just that, something I knew before this. Though not “royal” in one sense because her mother was woman in the lower social order, Pocahontas was recognized by her father. In fact, it was a well-documented book that honestly looked at what happened.

I thought it was going to be a book about all the wonderful things Pocahontas and the Native Americans did, and all the awful things the Europeans did to them.

However, it was a satisfying ending and a very enjoyable book. They myth of Pochontas is to pervasive that it was wonderful to see the real person behind the story – at least as much as we could see.

I had to read this pocahkntas my History of Women class, and I found this to be a very interesting tale and a new perspective on Pocahontas and her people. Pocahontas would become very ill around the time the Rolfe family was ready to head back to Virginia.
Over time many English were sent to live with natives to learn their culture anx a native would be sent with the English. I highly recommend this book–I read it in two days because it was fascinating and made clear what is known and what can be reasonably speculated, though our course syllabus spread the reading out over a week.
John Smith comes into play in when the English begin to prepare for the Virginia campaign. I really enjoyed this book and would recommend. I appreciated the details they added with the old writing style but there were just so many I forgot what story I was reading when they popped up; and they popped up A LOT.

This very readable book’s strengths lay in its not imagining Pocahontas as she is “traditionally” imagined in American minds and certainly not in Disney minds. Before her marriage though Pocahontas was kidnapped one of the main characters they looked over her kidnapping was Sir Thomas Dale who was the first Marshall of Pohatan.

I really enjoyed this book. I learned that much of what we were taught or told of her in are childhood was wrong.
It is thessi unrealistic to believe the Native Americans were only supplicant admirers of English culture and technology. Aug 01, Barbara Stevens rated it really liked it. It was interesting to read how the English took some of thesjs Indians to England to learn the language, so they could return and be translators.
I was sadly mistaken. Why so many quotes? This first part of the book it explains the culture of the Powhatan and how they are laid out. But most importantly if you were ever curious to know more about Pocahontas, this book is a great place to start and dispel the Disney myths. After the landing John Smith gets taken by the Powhatan and convince them not to kill him by way of trade.
